To launch MKW19, we present Duet LIVE – a live-scored, fully-immersive gaming experience that puts you in control. Behind this game’s simple facade is a thrilling philosophical depth and a mesmerising soundtrack by electronic musician Tim Shiel, performed with a four-piece band and string quartet. Come to the Hub, where you can choose to face off against a fellow audience member, or sit back and let the music and visuals wash over you. Stick around to enjoy the opening night party.

Tim Shiel is a musician and radio broadcaster based in Melbourne. He is known for his award-winning soundtracks for the games Duet and The Gardens Between, and for his on-air roles at Triple J and Double J. He is also the founder of local artist-run music label Spirit Level.

Join the futuristic celebrations with this award-winning interactive gaming and musical experience - Duet Live by electro-musician Tim Shiel. Play the game on the big screen in the Hub against other audience members to the accompaniment of pumping synths and base. Navigate the journey of two orbiting spheres through an increasingly complex maze of falling obstacles - then prepare for mounting tension against your gaming opponent as the difficulty increases and the story unfolds. It is a whole new way to experience music and gaming - and launch this year’s Melbourne Knowledge Week festivities.

Developed by Melbourne indie game studio Kumobius, Duet was released on iOS and Android in 2014 to wide critical acclaim, winning game of the year awards from Apple, The New Yorker and Kotaku, and becoming the App Store charts’ Top 10 game in over 25 countries. Tim Shiel's album-length soundtrack became an instant classic.

Don a pair of headphones plugged into Terrain, a custom-built app, to navigate through the Hub and experience a 3D audio journey of discovery. Explore the individual instruments and textures that make up this rich soundscape, which adapts to your movements through the transformed space. Transport yourself through the insides of a song and float off to an alternative audio landscape everyday or evening in the Hub during Melbourne Knowledge Week.

Steve Schmidt is Director of Work Design at BRM Projects with more than 15 years creative and commercial experience in retail, fashion and hospitality supported by tertiary training in architecture and sustainable design. Steve offers an unique suite of design skills and business understanding, ensuring client projects are translated and delivered to meet every need &#8211; functionally, economically and stylistically.
Steve joined BRM Projects as Director in 2014, bringing with him an innovative vision for design and change management to the workplaces of large scale companies and not-for-profits. He is dedicated to forming a new culture of work and strengthening the relationship between design and organisational performance.

Hear how our local innovators used a research trip to Boston to turn curiosity and hard work into impactful collaborative projects and business ventures. From Melbourne to Boston and back again, these scholars highlight how these great cities and their smartest people lead the way in inspired knowledge and excellence.

The Hugh Rogers Fellowship, a joint initiative by the Melbourne-Boston Sister Cities Association with the support of the City of Melbourne, has been awarded to talented, early-career professionals in health sciences, the arts and education since 2010.

The launch has become one of the largest startup networking events in Australia, attracting investors, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, all eager to discover the latest emerging entrepreneurial talent - with some of Australia’s most recognised startups including Honee, Carbar, CNSDose and Brosa having all taken the stage in recent years.

Global lighting design firm Arup, in collaboration with These Are The Projects We Do Together, lead a two-hour urban tour and workshop inviting you to learn about lighting design and reimagine our streets after dark. Curate and light up your evening with sound, projection and colour, while playing and interacting with lights in the city context. Come together with people of all backgrounds to discuss the urban experience, provide feedback on how to improve your safety and reimagine the streets of the night.
